TRADIES, 7 SIGNS THAT YOU’RE READY TO GO OUT ON YOUR OWN

The thought of going out on your own can be incredibly overwhelming, but equally exciting. Many tradies have these thoughts upon the completion of their apprenticeship. You might have even gone into your apprenticeship with the end goal of starting your own business in mind.

So when’s the right time?

To be honest, there will never be a 100% perfect time. We’ve compiled a little list to help you identify if now could be right for you.

1. YOUR ATTITUDE AT WORK HAS CHANGED

This is one of the worst feelings. If your usual ‘can-do’ attitude is morphing into a ‘can’t be bothered' attitude. This is one of the first biggest signs that you have outgrown your workplace. Developing a certain resentment towards your bosses (for no good reason) can also indicate that it’s time to get out.

2. YOU UNDERSTAND THE RISK OF STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS (AND WANT TO DO IT ANYWAY)

Business is risky. Understanding and managing risks is a crucial skill that needs to be developed before starting a business. If you have spoken to a professional, truly understand the risks, and are still excited to dive in, that’s awesome!

3. YOU’RE WILLING TO DO THINGS PROPERLY FROM THE START

There are so many moving parts in the running of a business and the fact of the matter is, you just can’t do it all. It is going to cost you money to set things up properly. If you understand this and are willing to outsource help in terms of accounting, bookkeeping, and branding, it’s going to save you a hell of a lot of time, money, and headaches later.

4. YOU HAVE SAVINGS

Businesses need money. You need money. Having a good little cushion of savings is a great starting point to allow you to be more ready to go out on your own.

5. YOU WORK BEST WITH AUTONOMY

If you have identified in your current role that you crave autonomy and work best when you can set your own tasks deadlines… it’s time my friend.

6. YOU’RE WILLING TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE

The whole build it and they will come mentality is bulls***, I’m sorry. You need to have the confidence to put yourself out there every single day. Tell the world what you’re doing and what you’re about. In this new, noisy world of social media, this is almost crucial to your success. So if you’re not willing to do it. Perhaps now is not the right time.

7. YOU CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT

Plain and simple, if something is consuming your mind. It’s probably worth exploring.

Of course, there are a million and one things to consider when starting a business. If 4 of these 7 points resonate with you, perhaps now is your time.
